Dr. Melissa Schacter earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the prestigious McGill University in Montreal, Canada, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Education and Women’s Studies. Later, she earned an Honorary Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling, as well as a Doctorate Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University, where she graduated with distinction. Dr. Schacter now serves as adjunct faculty at Nova Southeastern University in the department of Marriage and Family Therapy where she teaches and trains masters and doctorate level students at the Brief Therapy Clinic.

As a clinical member and an approved supervisor of the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), Melissa offers training to Florida state registered interns. She’s worked in a variety of different clinical settings, including hospitals, community clinics, and private practices. She’s also participated in research related to topics such as practicing helpful and useful therapy in a single session, the stigmas and obstacles associated with receiving professional help, the impact of technology on couples and the psychoneuroimmunological variables associated with HIV progression.

Melissa has been invited to conduct presentations at The Qualitative Report 6th Annual Conference: Visualization Techniques for Transforming Qualitative Data in Davie, FL, and the AMFT 2015 Annual Conference: Treating Technology Issues in Couples’ Relationships, in Austin, Texas. In 2015, she was awarded the President’s Faculty Research and Development Grant: Improving Access to Mental Health Care and Counseling Services for Families, as well as a grant from Nova Southeastern University to devise and operate a not-for-profit clinic specializing in walk-in Single Session Therapy for individuals, couples, and families. Dr. Schacter is now exclusively focusing her clinical attention to working with clients in a private practice setting, where she is the founder and clinical director of Care Counseling, LLC in Aventura, Florida.

​With clients, Dr. Schacter uses evidence-based approaches and prefers for her experiences with clients to be empowering, positive, goal-oriented and most importantly useful.  She encourages client growth and progress in a way that promotes independence, autonomy, and self-sufficiency. While she’s encouraging and positive by nature, she doesn’t shy away from challenging clients if it helps towards self-awareness, inspiring growth, and encouraging positive change. Dr.Schacter’s clients consistently rave about her transparency, warmth, and practicality; as well as her willingness to provide personalized and tailored care specific to the strengths and needs of her clients.

Melissa is licensed to provide therapy in the states of Florida and New York. She enjoys spending time with her family, teaching students, playing tennis, snowboarding, hiking, equestrian, cooking, and reading.
